AI search reporting gets confusing when every metric is called "AI traffic." A page can appear in an AI feature without a click. Someone can click through from ChatGPT without filling out a form. A lead can arrive days later by another channel. Build the report around three stages: visibility, visits and qualified enquiries.
1. Establish the visibility baseline in Search Console
Google's Search Console now provides generative AI performance reports for Search and Discover. The reports show impressions for URLs appearing in features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, along with pages, countries, devices and dates. Google says these impressions are also included in overall performance data. Do not add the dedicated number to the overall total as if it were separate traffic.
Pick a fixed comparison period, such as the previous 28 days. Save the total AI feature impressions and the pages that appeared. Look for a page-level pattern before acting. If a page gains visibility but no visits, check the query intent and whether the page gives someone a reason to continue reading. If the report is absent or sparse, confirm the property and date range before drawing conclusions.
2. Separate Google AI visits from assistant referrals in GA4
Google Analytics 4's default channel group has an AI Assistant channel for visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, DeepSeek and Grok. Google explicitly excludes clicks from its own AI Overviews and AI Mode from that channel. Those visits fall under Organic Search when Analytics can classify them. This distinction matters when a dashboard claims to show "all AI traffic" from one GA4 channel.
In GA4, open acquisition reporting and compare the session default channel group with session source and medium. Review AI Assistant sessions, engaged sessions and key events. Use the same date range as Search Console. The numbers will not match: Search Console counts search impressions and clicks, while GA4 measures visits after the page loads and tracking runs.
3. Mark actions that matter as key events
Choose a small set of outcomes: a submitted enquiry form, a completed booking, a phone call that meets your definition, or an order. Test each event yourself and confirm it fires once. A contact page view is intent, not a lead. If your business takes calls, use a reliable call tracking or CRM process before counting every tap on the phone number as a sale.
Our GA4 setup guide covers event basics. For the next step, connect the enquiry to a record in your CRM and mark whether it was qualified. Then you can report AI Assistant sessions, enquiries, qualified enquiries and customers without treating them as the same thing.
4. Record what attribution cannot tell you
Some assistants do not pass a useful referrer, and a person may read an answer, search the brand later, and convert through direct or organic traffic. Privacy controls and consent settings can also reduce recorded visits. These are measurement limits, not evidence that a channel produced no value.
For a small business, add one optional question to the form: "Where did you first hear about us?" Give customers a free-text answer rather than forcing them to guess among platforms. Use it as supporting evidence, not a replacement for Analytics. Review a short list of high-intent prompts monthly and log whether your business appears, what source was cited and whether the facts were correct. Prompt checks are samples, not a universal visibility score.
5. Make one monthly report someone can act on
- Search Console: AI feature impressions and top pages, plus overall organic clicks.
- GA4: AI Assistant sessions, Organic Search sessions, and key events.
- CRM: qualified enquiries, bookings or sales by recorded source when available.
- Observations: the exact page or answer to improve next month and why.
Do not multiply impressions by an assumed conversion rate and call it revenue. A useful report can say "this guide appeared more often, two assistant-referred visitors submitted enquiries, and one became a qualified lead." That is enough to decide whether to improve the guide, its offer or its next step. For the page improvements, start with our AI search preparation checklist.

Frequently asked questions
Does GA4 AI Assistant include Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are excluded from GA4 AI Assistant and included in Organic Search when classified.
Are AI feature impressions the same as website visits?
No. An impression means a URL appeared in a generative AI feature. A visit requires a person to click through and load your site.
Can I calculate revenue from AI search impressions alone?
No. Track enquiries and sales separately, and note that referrals and later brand searches may not capture every influence.
